What Should The House Apologize For?

Michelle Malkin  •  July 29, 2008 11:43 AM

Talk about warped priorities. The do-nothing/14 percent approval-rated Congress, led by Nancy the Navigator Pelosi, refuses to allow debate on drilling; the appropriations bills are in limbo, and judicial vacancies abound.

But hey, they’ve found time to take action on that all-important apology for slavery and Jim Crow laws

Next stop: Reparations!

What a sorry lot.

The resolution does not address the controversial issue of reparations. Some members of the African-American community have called on lawmakers to give cash payments or other financial benefits to descendents of slaves as compensation for the suffering caused by slavery.

The Mistake McCain Need Not Make

Reneging on his no-new-taxes pledge cost President George H.W. Bush a second term. Will John McCain play into Barack Obama's hands by making the same mistake on Social Security taxes?

Obama's Global Tax

A plan by Barack Obama to redistribute American wealth on a global level is moving forward in the Senate. It follows Marxist theology — from each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

It calls for the "eradication of poverty" in part through the "redistribution (of) wealth of land" and "a fair distribution of the earth's resources." In other words: American resources.

It's a mantra of liberals that the U.S. is only a small portion of the world's population yet consumes an unseemly portion of the planet's supposedly finite resources. Never mentioned is the fact that America's population, just 5% of the world's total, also produces a stunning 27% of the world's GDP — to the enormous benefit of other countries. Nonetheless, their solution is to siphon off the product of our free democracy and distribute it.

We already transfer too much national wealth to the United Nations and its busybody agencies. Obama's bill would force U.S. taxpayers to fork over 0.7% of our gross domestic product every year to fund a global war on poverty, spending well above the $16.3 billion in global poverty aid the U.S. already spends.

If you're worried abut gasoline and heating oil prices now, think what they'll be like when the U.S. is subjected in an Obama administration to global energy consumption and production taxes. Obama's Global Poverty Act is the "international community's" foot in the door.

The U.N. Millennium declaration called for a "currency transfer tax," a "tax on the rental value of land and natural resources," a "royalty on worldwide fossil energy production — oil, natural gas, coal . . . fees for the commercial use of the oceans, fees for the airplane use of the skies, fees for the use of the electromagnetic spectrum, fees on foreign exchange transactions, and a tax on the carbon content of fuels."

"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times . . . and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK," Obama has said. "That's not leadership. That's not going to happen."

Oh, really? Who's to say we can't load up our SUV and head out in search of bacon double cheeseburgers at the mall? China? India? Bangladesh? The U.N.?

Random Thoughts

It is hard to get the supporters of Barack Obama to give a coherent reason for their support. Lay of the Bailouts

Barack Obama’s motto “Change you can believe in” has acquired a new meaning — changing his positions is the only thing you can believe in. His campaign began with a huge change in the image he projects, compared to what he was doing for 20 years before.

What is amazing this year is how many people have bought the fundamentally childish notion that, if you don’t like the way things are going, the answer is to write a blank check for generic “change,” empowering someone chosen not on the basis of any track record but on the basis of his skill with words.

It is hard to get the supporters of Barack Obama to give a coherent reason for their support. The basis for their support seems to be guilt, gullibility, or — in the case of some conservatives — a hatred of John McCain.

How many in the media have expressed half as much outrage about the beheading of innocent people by terrorists in Iraq as they have about the captured terrorists held at Guantánamo not being treated as nicely as they think they should be?

Although most of the mainstream media are still swooning over Barack Obama, a few critics are calling the things he advocates “naive.” But that assumes that he is trying to solve the country’s problems. If he is trying to solve his own problem of getting elected, then he is telling the voters just what they want to hear. That is not naive but shrewd and cynical.

Senator John Kerry On Islam

The Bullet America Dodged

Remember John Kerry? He was the Democrats' presidential nominee a scant four years ago, and he is still making the occasional speech, as if to remind us how wise we were not to elect him. Last night he gave what the Boston Globe's Michael Paulson touts as "a major speech on interfaith dialogue" at a "Christian-Muslim conference" at Yale.

Kerry also said, "I know enough about Islam to know that I don't know enough about Islam," which we guess is supposed to explain why he voted for the Iraq war despite his retrospective pro-Saddam position.

In any case, Kerry's mild antipathy toward America plainly is rooted in ignorance. He blames America for the lack of "mutual understanding with the Muslim world," but the basic problem is that certain strains of Islam encourage their adherents to kill for their religion. In fact, an Associated Press story illustrates what America's enemies think of interfaith dialogues

Anyone who thinks the problem is that Americans don't understand our enemies' religion, doesn't understand our enemies' religion. Good thing we had enough sense to keep such a man out of the White House.

Stump The Band

NYT wonders: Why didn’t Obama leave his aides behind and visit those wounded troops alone?

Gooooood question. One that’s been asked before. Repeatedly.

Before his visit to Ramstein Air Base, which is near the medical center, was canceled, the plan called for reporters to stay behind at an airport terminal while Mr. Obama and one adviser met with the troops. Why? The Pentagon does not allow reporters and photographers inside Landstuhl…

[O]ne question remains: Why didn’t Mr. Obama leave his aides behind, even the retired general, and make the visit by himself?

“Even him going alone would likely be characterized by some as a political event,” Mr. Gibbs said in an interview on Monday, adding, “He decided not to put the troops in that position.”

Really? Then why’d he meet with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, or at Walter Reed a few weeks ago? He has every right to go in his capacity as senator, minus his campaign apparatus. And if they were so worried about perceptions of politicking, why did Gibbs himself tell the media pool on the plane that the visit had been planned “for a long time”? Surely they’d already weighed that factor and decided it was worth going — until Gen. Gration was turned away, whereupon the whole plan changed.

Obama & Liberal Stuff

McCain is up among likely voters, and the MSM are shocked. They think everyone loves The Messiah Obama as much as they do.

The Media are shocked that Obama isn't up in the polls, because they're portraying him as acting president, saying he's going to make America liked. Most Americans don't care to have this country defined by whether or not people in other countries like us, particularly the Europeans. The MSM live in their own cocoon and they think that whatever they're doing is going to transfer to the same kind of adoration for Obama that they have amongst the rest of the people

Petty Tyrants Can Never Abide Dissent Or Debate

Dems cracking on oil exploration?

The Republicans in the Senate have made good on their pledge to bring the upper chamber to a halt until a full debate and vote on drilling can take place.  Reid cannot split off any Republicans, although he tried with an omnibus spending package consisting of $10 billion in pork.  The Republicans refused to bite, however, and Reid needs some way to satisfy enough of them to take control of the chamber again.

Unfortunately, his own caucus won’t allow it.  Despite polling that shows 70% of American voters favoring expanded domestic oil production, Democrats appear determined to obstruct it.  Lautenberg grasped onto the oil spill in New Orleans as an excuse not to drill, even though the spill has nothing to do with drilling; an oil tanker ran into a barge, and oil tankers would exist with or without new drilling.  Pelosi, meanwhile, has closed debate in the House, claiming to be on a mission

Actually, she will not have this debate at all.  Over a year ago, a few months after taking control of the House, Pelosi bragged about stripping Big Oil of its tax incentives and the redirection of money towards corn ethanol and a variety of energy alternatives as the Democratic strategy specific to lowering gas prices.  Instead of going down, prices have risen a full third in the intervening year.  Whose policy has failed?  Small wonder she has taken the path of the petty tyrant and stifled all debate in the House.
