Kicking The Tires Of T. Boone's Natural-Gas Car

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman Sunday pines for billionaire-friendly central planning on energy so that his green dreams might be forced down our collective throats:“If only we had a Congress and president who. . . just sat down with Boone (Pickens). . . and asked one question: 'What laws . . . Go

“Obviously,” wrote C&D, “paying more for a (natural gas) Civic is not a financially driven choice but an environmentally driven one.”

Which is precisely why Friedman and Pickens want to pass laws to make that choice on your behalf.

More Obama

If Obama had had his way, we would have lost in Iraq. But he positioned himself exactly right in the Democratic primaries. This is shameful. Losing Side

The Democratic nominee suffers from a severe case of Obamamania.

Obama

There are many wrong ways to attack The Messiah, because his followers -- Barack Obama doesn't have "supporters" -- don't care about flip-flops, or his terrorist buddies, or his lies just like they didn't care about Bill Clinton's lies and flip-flops. Go after Obama's inexperience and radical policies.

"I don't care about Obama's flip-flops in the past. I don't care what he said about the surge then versus now, except in terms of it shows his inexperience. But to go over to Europe and tell these people that his is an imperfect country and we've made a lot of mistakes and we've got a lot to pay for -- especially to a country and a group of people who we have saved in any number of ways."

"Obama is running two campaigns: a more underground one for the black community which plays up his race; and another for the media and the broader population which plays down his race."

Keep Talking

Video: Seven minutes of nothing with Ahmadinejad; Video: Pelosi “chilled”

A snippet from his photo op with Brian Williams, the rest of which will air tonight on NBC’s evening news. Funnier than anything Ahmadinejad says is Williams’s breathless hype about Iran supposedly having adopted “a new stance, ready for further engagement.” Hey, Brian? They’ve been pushing “further engagement” for six years. The whole point of their strategy is to buy time. The closest this comes to an actual scoop is the Q&A at 3:38, when Ahmadinejad hints that if the west and Iran can reach some sort of agreement on points in common between their two proposals, then they can proceed to meaningful discussions about points in contention, namely, suspending enrichment. To see what that would mean in practice, revisit the Times’s story from last week about western diplomats literally laughing at the position paper Iran presented them with. Quote:

In its paper, Iran focused only on negotiating a “comprehensive agreement” for the rewards. The paper also said current international sanctions against Iran would be discontinued. The Iranian nuclear issue will no longer be dealt with by the Security Council or the 35-country governing board of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Only the atomic energy agency itself can deal with the subject, the paper said.

Lift the sanctions, defang the already mostly defanged Security Council, and then, maybe, they’ll be willing to talk about suspending enrichment via a whole new round of negotiations that “would take a minimum of several years,” according to one European diplomat familiar with the plan. Mind you, since this “offer” was extended, Ahmadinejad himself has said that they won’t retreat one iota from their nuclear rights and Iran’s vice president has hinted they might stop cooperating with the IAEA — which, per the blockquote, is already the only entity they’ll even consider cooperating with. So much for a “new stance.”

Exit Strategy

Audio: NPR asks Petraeus, “How does this end?”

Answer: A hell of a lot better than it would have if the left had had its way last year, although naturally he’s prohibited from saying so. But couple his response to the question with his point that withdrawal has to be conditions-based and it’s clear what he thinks the consequences of a significant U.S. drawdown in the near term would be. Good thing Barack Obama no longer favors one.

Hey, World Court: Bug Off!

Michelle Malkin  •  July 16, 2008 01:15 PM

They just won’t stop meddling with our sovereignty. The weenies on the World Court are leaning on their friend President Bush to stop the execution of five illegal alien Death Row inmates. You’ll recall that in March, our Supreme Court sided with the state of Texas in upholding US sovereignty and rejecting the World Court/Bush view that individual US states should submit to international law and overturn the will of the people on the death penalty.

What part of “No” don’t they understand?

What will the White House do? Remember, President Bush stood with the World Court against America.

And where would our two presidential candidates stand on this case?

Not hard to guess.

Former Texas solicitor general Ted Cruz, who successfully argued the case, provided good background on the fight here

How much longer will they have to wait?

In The Bag

Fox poll: Voters “skeptical” of Obama’s World Tour

In fact, two-thirds of the public are convinced that the media wants Obama to win.  Those aren’t just Republicans, either  More than 60% of Democrats and of independents also believe that the media wants Obama to win.  The devotion of so many news reporting assets to Obama’s tour made that very obvious.

Message to the media: Next time, don’t make it so obvious.

Blackwater Keeps O! Rollin’

Who handled Obama’s Iraq security? Blackwater

At US News & World Report, Paul Bedard whispers that Blackwater handled Barack Obama’s security during his trip to Afghanistan and helped in Iraq:

What’s more, Obama was overheard saying: “Blackwater is getting a bad rap.”
