Sounds Reasonable

Perhaps The Climate Change Models Are Wrong - They drift along in the worlds’ oceans at a depth of 2,000 metres — more than a mile deep — constantly monitoring the temperature, salinity, pressure and velocity of the upper oceans.

Then, about once every 10 days, a bladder on the outside of these buoys inflates and raises them slowly to the surface gathering data about each strata of seawater they pass through. After an upward journey of nearly six hours, the Argo monitors bob on the waves while an onboard transmitter sends their information to a satellite that in turn retransmits it to several land-based research computers where it may be accessed by anyone who wishes to see it.

These 3,000 yellow sentinels –about the size and shape of a large fence post — free-float the world’s oceans, season in and season out, surfacing between 30 and 40 times a year, disgorging their findings, then submerging again for another fact-finding voyage. (L

MSM Are For Obama

'Obama Won Over His Base...the American Media'

Roger Simon, chief political columnist for The Politico and former White House correspondent for the Chicago Tribune and political editor of U.S.
News & World Report, acknowledged on Sunday's Face the Nation that Barack Obama's speech on race won over "his base," which Simon identified as "the
American media.".

Obama Soft On Crime?

Obama doesn't talk much about his views on crime and punishment — at least not in front of general audiences — and for good reason.

As an Illinois state senator, for example, he acted more as a friend to criminals than to cops, legislating among other things . . .

. . . Obama, who once vowed to repeal the Patriot Act, still talks about reforming it. He also once proposed banning executions of inmates, arguing he was against capital punishment.

It's not clear where Obama stands on the issue now, but he does think death row and the entire U.S. penal system are stacked against blacks. While so far only alluding to racism as the culprit, his mentor Rev. Jeremiah Wright minces no words in blaming "racist white America."

"The brothers are in prison" largely because of their skin color, he claims.

Unfortunately, Obama listens to his preacher and buys into his conspiracy theories. "In our criminal justice system, African-Americans and whites are arrested at very different rates," Obama recently complained. "It has to do with how we pursue racial justice."

He vows to pursue it with gusto, unleashing civil rights cops on police chiefs and district attorneys who dare to arrest and prosecute criminals who happen to be of color.

More important, what kind of justices does Obama have in mind to replace aging veterans on the high court, which decides the constitutionality of capital punishment cases?

If We Could Drill...

One driver who might join a threatened truckers strike says "there's no reason for" fuel prices to be so high. Actually, there are many reasons. But they aren't necessarily good ones.

The retail price of diesel fuel is determined by the global price of oil. And, yes, at more than $100 a barrel, it is high. But it's not due to some corporate conspiracy. ExxonMobil and Chevron are not colluding on prices.

With demand rising, prices must move up. If they don't, shortages will follow. Unless, of course, supply is increased.

In the case of oil, though, this isn't happening.

Naturally, the oil industry is blamed. The popular complaint is that it is holding back because of greed. But the problem is due to government policy, both here and abroad.

For instance, last year diesel users were forced to switch to new low-sulfur blends. So today, it's more expensive to make — by law.

In the U.S., a Congress cowed by hysterical special interests has refused to allow the development of a rich oil field in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It has similarly forbidden the harvesting of crude from fertile fields off of our coasts.

We watch helplessly while prices at the pump reach $4 point in the priciest U.S. markets and as much as 131 billion barrels of oil remain off-limits beneath our soil and our waters. Even the prospect of that oil hitting the world market would hit crude prices hard. Imagine what its actual arrival on the market would do.

Their allies in the ruin of the many truckers who can no longer afford to fill up their rigs and the wider economic decline a truckers strike or slowdown would have are the environmental groups and the lawmakers who are aligned with — and afraid of — them.

The Real McCarthy Revealed

The latest sin ex-President Clinton is accused of is "McCarthyism." But a new, meticulously researched book corrects misconceptions about the abuse of that term by the media and the left.

. . . The dictionary defines McCarthyism as "personal attacks on individuals by means of widely publicized indiscriminate allegations, especially on the basis of unsubstantiated charges."

More than a half-century after the death of Sen. Joseph McCarthy, even many anti-communist intellectuals join in the almost universal revilement of the Wisconsin Republican's memory.

British historian Andrew Roberts in his "History of the English-Speaking Peoples Since 1900" writes that McCarthy "did not in fact discover a single communist."

. . . veteran reporter and editor M. Stanton Evans, founder of Washington's National Journalism Center, proves that Applebaum, Roberts and countless others have swallowed whole a lie — because they never bothered to go back and check the facts.

It's a lie that gets regurgitated today each time the word McCarthyism is used as an insulting epithet.

. . . list of 10 McCarthy targets that turned out, indeed, to have been spying on this country.

The names, now lost in the obscurity of history, include FDR's executive assistant, Lauchlin Currie, identified as Soviet agent Page by the Venona decrypts made public in the 1990s. Currie, McCarthy said in 1951, was "at the Washington end of the transmission belt conveying poisonous misinformation from Chungking" against anti-communist Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek.

Another of the 10 Evans cites is Mary Jane Keeney, "listed by the FBI as a courier for the Communist Party while working for the government," as McCarthy noted in early 1950. She, along with her husband, Phillip, are confirmed by Venona to have been agents.

By the time McCarthy outed her, she had left the State Department for the United Nations. The history books make McCarthy's enemies out as selfless heroes.

Most famously, Army counsel Joseph Welch at the Army-McCarthy hearings thundered "Have you left no sense of decency?" when McCarthy supposedly smeared Welch's legal assistant, Fred Fisher, by charging he had been a member of the National Lawyers Guild, listed by the attorney general as a communist front.

That Welch outburst also was a lie. Evans reproduces the New York Times article in which Welch himself publicly confirmed — weeks earlier — that Fisher belonged to the front, and for which Welch removed Fisher from his staff.

In the War Of Ideas: Arrest Me, Please

Some prisoners don't want to be released from detention in Iraq until their vocational training is complete. What's more, parents of juvenile detainees want their other young sons apprehended as well. An increasing number of Iraqi detainees are refusing to leave detention centres despite being eligible for release because they . . . Go

Provincial Reconstruction Teams throughout Iraq been equipped to analyze vocational needs by region (province) and go about the process of implementing the appropriate programs?

The PRT's have evolved into incredibly effective coordinated operations, staffed with a cross-section of civilian diplomats, military personel and various other specialists. Perhaps they would benefit from adding a Vocational/Training Specialist billet to the teams if they do not already have such.

We don't require months of Pentagon or State Department anthropological study to figure this out. Just listen to the Iraqi prisoners and their parents.
