From the National Review blog. What kind of an outlook is this? Is this what will happen? What do all of you think?
Is the 2008 Presidential Election Much Ado About Nothing?
Let me advance an oddball thought. Despite all the excitement over this uniquely open and protracted presidential race, could it be that it may not matter very much?
Unless Congress acts affirmatively to extend them, the Bush tax cuts are scheduled to expire in the next presidential term. Regardless of who wins the presidency, it seems inevitable that the Dems will hold both houses of Congress, and probably expand their majorities in each. In which case, it does not matter what the Republican candidates say to the Club for Growth: taxes will rise after 2009.
Likewise, we can expect that the next Congress will force troop withdrawals from Iraq, whether the next president is D or R.
An R president will nominate more conservative judges than a D obviously. But will a liberal Senate confirm them?
Of course it is always better to keep than lose the presidency. Still, from time to time I wonder - even if the Rs do keep it in 2008, what exactly will they have kept?
