Demand For Ethanol

Read this article about parts of the Bush energy policy.  About use of ethanol, Read it here.

By artificially creating a demand for ethanol where none before existed, the original renewable-fuels standard has already helped drive up food prices. As the Associated Press wrote back in March, “People don’t eat the kind of corn that makes ethanol, but cows, pigs and chickens do. And people eat other grains that will become less plentiful as farmers plant more corn. Demand for ethanol is pushing feed prices higher and enticing farmers to switch from other crops.” The prices of chicken and eggs have gone up roughly 15 percent since the mandate kicked in last year. The price of corn syrup has jumped, too, meaning higher prices for everything from bread and ketchup and Coca-Cola to infant formula and frozen foods.

Any Comments?

From a National Review article "None Of The Above."

President McCain? President Giuliani? President Romney? President Thompson? Yeah, well. As one of my NRO colleagues has correctly observed: The GOP could run the Risen Christ as a candidate in ’08, but if the Iraq/Afghanistan war has not been brought to some satisfactory conclusion, or to well within sight of such, by voting day, we shall lose.

Does It Matter?

From the National Review blog.  What kind of an outlook is this?  Is this what will happen?  What do all of you think?

Is the 2008 Presidential Election Much Ado About Nothing?

Let me advance an oddball thought. Despite all the excitement over this uniquely open and protracted presidential race, could it be that it may not matter very much?

Unless Congress acts affirmatively to extend them, the Bush tax cuts are scheduled to expire in the next presidential term. Regardless of who wins the presidency, it seems inevitable that the Dems will hold both houses of Congress, and probably expand their majorities in each. In which case, it does not matter what the Republican candidates say to the Club for Growth: taxes will rise after 2009.

Likewise, we can expect that the next Congress will force troop withdrawals from Iraq, whether the next president is D or R.

An R president will nominate more conservative judges than a D obviously. But will a liberal Senate confirm them?

Of course it is always better to keep than lose the presidency. Still, from time to time I wonder - even if the Rs do keep it in 2008, what exactly will they have kept?

We Can See This

The excerpt is from an article called "The Clinton 'wall' at the Justice Department."  Read it here.

The common thread to each of these disparities where aggressive investigation and prosecution are concerned is politics. If the perpetrator is of the Republican persuasion the investigation and prosecution are aggressive and relentless. If the perpetrator is of the left side of the aisle the investigation is half-hearted or practically non-existent and the penalties are consistently comprised of milquetoast plea bargains that are grossly inadequate for the crime.
