Quran Influenced The Founders?

Ellison: Quran influenced America's founding fathers

Detroit native Keith Ellison, the first Muslim Congressman, told the Free Press Friday that he
used the Quran during his oath of office because the Islamic holy book helped influence the
founding fathers of America.

Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat, garnered international attention Thursday when he used a
Quran once owned by Thomas Jefferson during his ceremonial swearing-in ceremony for the
House of Representatives.

The Quran is "definitely an important historical document in our national history and
demonstrates that Jefferson was a broad visionary thinker who not only possessed a Quran,
but read it," Ellison said in an interview with the Free Press. "It would have been something
that contributed to his own thinking."

Ellison was criticized by some commentators for using the Quran during his oath off office.
Ellison said he decided to use Jefferson's Quran after receiving a letter from someone who told
him about the copy, which is with the Library of Congress. U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode, a Virginia
Republican, slammed Ellison for using a Quran.

But Ellison said Friday that Jefferson's Quran "shows that from the earliest times of this
republic, the Koran was in the consciousness of people who brought about democracy."

Islam Misinterpreted?

"Like all religion, Islam can be misinterpreted by fanatics…"

Nearly every reasonable-sounding Muslim who contacts us to defend Islam against the mounting evidence that it is a violent religion manages to say something similar to this.  In other circumstances, of course, these same apologists bristle at the suggestion that their religion is just as imperfect as others, insisting that Islam is Allah’s perfect religion for mankind.

But, if history and current events tell us anything, it is that “Allah’s perfect religion” is far more susceptible to “misinterpretation” than others - and that’s putting it kindly.  Qur'anic passages like "surely Allah loves those who fight in his way" and "be not weary and faint-hearted, crying for peace" raise legitimate suspicion over just whom is really misinterpreting the religion.

Meanwhile, the most passionate Muslims rack up huge body counts in the name of Islam, while enjoying the outright support or stark indifference from most of the rest.  The more vocal Muslims in today's world are far more interested in making excuses or engaging their critics in theological one-upmanship than they are in resolving the violence… and thus it continues.

Can't Govern From Capitol Hill

The below is from a Weekly Standard article which can be read here

Democrats are not powerless. They can make life in Washington unpleasant for the Bush administration. They can turn oversight hearings into partisan show trials. They can bombard the administration with subpoenas. They can leak what they find to the press. They can recommend Bush appointees for criminal prosecution.

But they cannot stop the president from deploying more troops in Iraq to secure Baghdad, as he is expected to do soon. And while they can reject confirmation of Bush's nominees for United Nations ambassador, director of national intelligence, and deputy secretary of state, Bush can respond with recess appointments. The Democrats' ultimate weapon is a cutoff of funds for Iraq, but they have said they won't use this weapon, for now anyway.

One might suppose the White House would be chastened, given Bush's dismal public approval rating. Bush and his aides aren't. Instead, they're amused by Democratic pretensions of being in charge of Washington. "It's just hilarious," an aide says. "They've got to legislate. We govern. We run things." Presidents, even unpopular ones, usually do.

No Diversity

The most disturbing part of the ceremony for us, watching on CNN, was listening to the anchors gush over Ellison’s choice of Jefferson's Qur'an and attributing it to the congressman's “strong commitment” to "diversity" and the "inclusion of all religions."  But CNN should know better than to repeat press releases as if they are fact.

Anyone looking closely would see that Keith Ellison, like nearly every other Muslim leader, has not shown the slightest interest in supporting “religious diversity” in Muslim countries, such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, where tolerance and freedom of conscience are horribly lacking.  He has never advocated a Muslim’s freedom to renounce their beliefs or the system of faith-based discrimination that is institutionalized in Islamic law.

For Muslims, “tolerance” and “religious diversity” mean only that the non-Muslim West should become more Muslim.  And, in our opinion, this is a perfect example of why it should not.

You Got What You Wanted

To any and all [conservatives] who did not vote in November or did not vote Republican because "they were not pure enough" or "not conservative enough" this is part of what we are going to get.  From an article from the Associated Press; "Over the next few weeks, Senate Democrats plan to hold at least 11 hearings just on Iraq. In the House, one of the Democrats' most dogged investigators is waiting to spring his committee on a different mission — suspected government fraud. And this "The hearings are one way for Democrats to respond to the party's anti-war wing. Last week, as Democrats prepared to assume power in the new Congress, anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan and a group of protesters interrupted a Democratic press conference, chanting "De-escalate. Investigate. Troops home now!"  Read the article here
As the saying goes, be careful what you ask for because you just might get it.

Real Torture

This article from World Net Daily
describes what happened under Saddam, and the daily horrors that make the Abu Ghraib abuses seem almost trivial.
